Impact of Addiction on a Relationship with a Spouse

Time and Energy

Addiction consumes the addict’s time and energy into specific obsessions and compulsions. Less time and energy is available for other people and other pursuits. Addicts are choked emotionally, because they are preoccupied with self-centered behavior whose primary purpose is to sustain the addiction.

In a marriage, the deterioration in the emotional and physical qualities of the relationship is as progressive as the disease. Sexual intimacy is often absent or totally dissatisfying to either or both partners.

Sad Humor

Consider the sadness, disappointment and anger which lies beneath the humorous veneer of the following:

The man was in no shape to drive, so he wisely left his car parked

and walked home.  As he was walking unsteadily  along, he was stopped

by a policeman "What are you doing out here at 2  A.M.?" "I'm going to a lecture." The man said."And who is going to give a lecture at this  hour?" the cop asked.

My Wife, he said!
